My Writing

Fiction

As a lawyer, my writing was always constrained by fact, with creativity limited to factual emphasis and the means of expression. Writing fiction has no limits. I find it wonderfully exhilarating.

Novel and Short Story

I love both of these forms of fiction. A novel is the opportunity to tell a longer story with complex characters and multiple themes. The short story provides the challenge of compact story-telling where the payoff is an intellectual or emotional effect that resonates with the reader.

Why I Write

Writing has always given me joy. Writing is thinking, exploring, organizing, and clarifying the world around us. It is communication, education, inspiration, entertainment. It is permanence, a way to make a lasting mark in the world.

About Me

For many years, I earned my living as a trial lawyer. Now I spend my time writing, traveling the world, and photographing what I see.

Writing fiction is my passion. My first short story, “Voices,” was published earlier this year in the collection The Peaks of Madness. I am currently at work on a murder mystery set in Malibu.

My photography focuses on landscape and wildlife. Conservation of the natural world is essential for human well-being. I hope my images inspire people to do so.

I am a graduate of Indiana University (A.B. in Economics) and Stanford Law School (J.D.) and a member of the Bars of California and Utah.
